MAY DAY BASKETS

History of May Day
May Day was celebrated by some of the early European settlers of the American continent. In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made. These are small baskets usually filled with flowers or treats and left on someone's doorstep. The giver would ring the bell and run away. The person receiving the basket would try to catch the fleeing giver. If they caught the person, a kiss was to be exchanged.

In celebration of May Day {May 1st}, recycle a tin can and turn it into a great May Day basket.
Great project to do with the kids. It is fun and easy. Plus the kids will feel the joys of secret service.

You can spray paint the cans first or just decorate the silver can with vinyl.
I used flowers from my garden to fill the cans. You can also use treats.

Step 1: spray paint an empty can
{spray the can upside down so the color doesn't get on the inside of the can}

Step 2: for a two-color look, apply vinyl lettering and spray paint the can another color
{let paint dry until it's tacky, then remove the vinyl stencil}

The best part about recycling an old tin can, the cans are waterproof so you can keep your flowers fresh until delivery! I used flowers from my garden, or you could fill the cans with yummy treats.

{color may vary due to different printer calibrations}
